Med School Revealed

Attending a community college PDF Print E-mail

Will going to a community college hurt your application to medical school? It depends. I myself attended a community college for the first two years of my college education before transferring to a four-year university and I don't feel that it negatively impacted my application whatsoever. During those two years I took many of the basic general ed courses while deciding on a major. About half of my pre-requisite courses for medical school were taken at the junior college level and the rest at a university.

Medical schools realize that community colleges have their place in the educational system. They can be a great way for someone who is undecided on a major to figure things out while saving money along the way. Community colleges should not, however, be used to take watered-down courses in order to raise one's GPA. For example, someone who has been enrolled at a four-year university since the beginning of college yet was able to find a way to take all of his/her pre-requisite science courses at the community college may look a bit suspicious to an admissions committee. Also, several of the pre-requisite science courses in my opinion should be taken at the university level. Otherwise, I think attending a community college would be just fine.
